Learn how to express “some action took place somewhere” using the structure “Verb + 在 + Place Word”
1 Basic Location Pattern
Previously, we learned that 在 (zài) can express an action in progress. In this lesson, we will learn the structure “Verb + 在 + Place Word”, which means “some action took place somewhere”.
In this structure, 在 acts as a verb-suffix that connects the action to the location where it occurred.

Complete Sentence: 我出生在中国。
(I was born in China.)
在 for Action in Progress
Meaning: Indicates an action is currently happening
Example: 我在吃饭。
(I am eating.)
Verb + 在 for Location
Meaning: Indicates where an action took place
Example: 我住在中国。
(I live in China.)
Key Grammar Distinction
The position of 在 (zài) changes the meaning completely:
Indicates ongoing action
Indicates location of action
Remember: Verb + 在 + Place Word describes WHERE an action happens, not WHEN it happens.
