Learn two ways to form questions using the particle “呢 (ne)” in Chinese: for abbreviated questions and questions with emotional tones
1 Introduction to “呢 (ne)”
The particle “呢 (ne)” is a versatile question particle in Chinese that serves two main functions:
- Creating abbreviated questions – Asking “what about…?” or “how about…?” after a statement
- Adding emotional tones to questions – Expressing curiosity, doubt, or complaint when used with question words

Key Concept: Context-Based Questions
Unlike standalone questions, questions with “呢” always depend on context provided by a preceding statement. The question is abbreviated because the context has already been established, making the full question unnecessary.
