1 Basic 又…又… Pattern

The 又…又… structure is used in Chinese to express that something or someone possesses two qualities or characteristics simultaneously. It translates to “both…and…” in English.

This pattern is commonly used with adjectives (stative verbs) to describe dual characteristics of a subject.

Subject + + Adjective 1 + + Adjective 2

First Quality

yòu kě
both thirsty

Second Quality

饿
yòu è
and hungry

Complete Sentence:

探险家们 饿
tànxiǎnjiāmen yòu kě yòu è.
The explorers are both thirsty and hungry.

Key Grammar Points

1. Used for Simultaneous Qualities

又…又… describes two characteristics that exist at the same time:

又饿又渴
both hungry and thirsty (at the same time)

Not used for sequential actions (use 先…然后… for that).

2. Can Use Positive or Negative Adjectives

The adjectives can be positive, negative, or mixed:

又聪明又努力 (positive + positive)
又小又不卫生 (positive + negative)
又贵又不好吃 (negative + negative)

The 又…又… pattern can be used with various types of words and phrases, not just simple adjectives. It can connect adjectives, verb phrases, and even short clauses.

好 (hǎo)

Subject Placement

The Subject comes at the beginning of the sentence:

Pattern:
Subject + 又 + Adjective 1 + 又 + Adjective 2
Example:

This room + both + big + and + bright

又 (yòu) Function

The word 又 (yòu) means “again” in other contexts, but in this structure it functions as a conjunction meaning “both…and…”:

Structure:
又 + [Quality 1] + 又 + [Quality 2]
Important: Two 又’s are required in this pattern.

Adjective Types

Various types of adjectives can be used:

Simple adjectives:
大,小,好,坏
big, small, good, bad
Complex adjectives:
聪明,漂亮,有意思
smart, beautiful, interesting

Negative Forms

Negative adjectives can be formed with 不 (bù):

Pattern: 不 + Adjective
不卫生,不好吃,不方便
unclean, not tasty, inconvenient
Note: 没 (méi) is not typically used in this structure for creating negative adjectives.
