Learn the different meanings and usages of 下 as a result verb in Chinese: directional meaning (down), “off”, and capacity/room for something
1 Basic Introduction
下 (xià) is opposite to 上 (shàng). While 上 means “to go up” or “to get on”, 下 means “to go down”, “to get off”, and indicates a downwards direction.
When used as a result verb, 下 has two different main meanings:
- Downwards directional meaning (to go down, to sit down)
- Capacity or room for something (to have space for, to be able to contain)
2 Downwards Directional Meaning
When 下 means “downwards”, it indicates movement in a downward direction. This can be physical movement (sitting down, putting something down) or metaphorical (lowering one’s head).
Examples: Downwards Meaning
Note: 下来 (xià lái) for Downwards Movement
When 下 is used to mean “downwards”, it is often combined with 来 to form 下来 (xià lái), which emphasizes the direction toward the speaker or a completed downward movement.
