Time Words

Learn how Chinese expresses tense through time words instead of verb conjugation, and master the proper word order for time expressions

Expressing Tense in Chinese

Unlike English and many European languages, Chinese does not use verb conjugation to indicate tense. Instead, Chinese relies on time words to convey when an action occurs. This is a fundamental difference between Chinese and English grammar.

English vs. Chinese Tense Expression

English (Verb Conjugation)
I eat. (present)
I ate. (past)
I will eat. (future)
Verb changes form
Chinese (Time Words)
现在吃。 (present)
昨天吃。 (past)
明天吃。 (future)
Verb stays the same

In Chinese, the verb 吃 (chī – to eat) remains unchanged. The time words 现在 (now), 昨天 (yesterday), and 明天 (tomorrow) indicate when the action occurs.

Past Tense

Expressed with past time words

Examples:
昨天 (yesterday)
去年 (last year)
上个月 (last month)
昨天学习。
zuótiān xuéxí.
I studied yesterday.

Present Tense

Expressed with present time words

Examples:
今天 (today)
现在 (now)
这个月 (this month)
现在学习。
xiànzài xuéxí.
I am studying now.

Future Tense

Expressed with future time words

Examples:
明天 (tomorrow)
明年 (next year)
下个月 (next month)
明天学习。
míngtiān xuéxí.
I will study tomorrow.

1 Common Time Words in Chinese

Chinese has a systematic approach to time expressions. Basic time words can be combined to create more specific time references. Here are the most commonly used time words organized by time period.

Chinese Pinyin English Time Category Audio
昨天 zuó tiān yesterday Past
今天 jīn tiān today Present
明天 míng tiān tomorrow Future
上个月 shàng gè yuè last month Past
这个月 zhè gè yuè this month Present
下个月 xià gè yuè next month Future
去年 qù nián last year Past
今年 jīn nián this year Present
明年 míng nián next year Future
过去 guò qù in the past Past
现在 xiàn zài now Present
将来 jiāng lái in the future Future

Creating Specific Time Expressions

Chinese time expressions can be made more specific by combining time words. The general pattern is: Larger time unit + Smaller time unit.

Past Examples
昨天八点
zuótiān bā diǎn
8 o’clock yesterday
Present Examples
今天上午
jīntiān shàngwǔ
this morning
Future Examples
明天晚上
míngtiān wǎnshang
tomorrow night
Date Examples
下个月五号
xià gè yuè wǔ hào
the 5th next month

This pattern allows for precise time expressions while maintaining logical consistency: from larger time units to smaller ones.

No Prepositions with Time Words

Unlike English, Chinese time words do not require prepositions like “at,” “in,” or “on.” This is a common mistake for English speakers learning Chinese.

Correct (Chinese way):
她下午来。 (tā xiàwǔ lái) – She will come in the afternoon.
Incorrect (English influence):
她在下午来 (tā zài xiàwǔ lái) – Direct translation with preposition

Remember: Time words stand alone in Chinese sentences without prepositions. The preposition is implied by the word order and context.
