Possession 的 1

Learn how to express possession and relationships in Chinese using the particle 的 (de)

Basic Usage of 的 (de)

The particle 的 (de) is the primary way to indicate possession or relationship in Chinese. It functions similarly to English possessive forms like “‘s” or “of,” connecting the possessor (modifier) with the possessed (modified).

English vs. Chinese Possession

English Methods
  • Possessive pronouns: my house
  • Noun + ‘s: the teacher’s book
  • Using “of”: a friend of Michael
Chinese Method
  • Single particle: 的 (de)
  • Modifier + 的 + Modified
  • Used for all possession types

In Chinese, 的 (de) is added to the pronoun or noun (as modifier), preceding the noun being modified.

When to Omit 的

In Chinese, 的 (de) is often omitted in specific contexts, particularly when there is a close personal relationship between the modifier and the modified. This omission makes the expression more natural and colloquial.

Pronoun/Noun + (的) + Close Relationship Noun

Close Relationships

的 is often omitted with family members and close personal relationships:

(的)妈妈
wǒ (de) māmā
my mother
(的)哥哥
tā (de) gēge
his older brother

Intimate Connections

Omitted for possessions with intimate or inherent connections:

(的)
wǒ (de) jiā
my home
(的)学校
nǐ (de) xuéxiào
your school

Fixed Expressions

Certain fixed expressions typically omit 的:

我们(的)国家
wǒmen (de) guójiā
our country
中国(的)文化
Zhōngguó (de) wénhuà
Chinese culture

Key Rule: Only One 的

Normally, only one 的 appears in a possessive chain. When multiple levels of possession exist, 的 is used only at the final connection point.

我妻子朋友
wǒ qīzǐ de pénɡyǒu
my wife’s friend (的 omitted between 我 and 妻子)

This creates more natural and fluid expressions in Chinese.
