Learn how to make negative comparative statements in Chinese using 没有 (méiyǒu) for “not as…as” expressions
Introduction: Negative Comparison
Grammar Explanation: Previously, we learned how to make comparisons using “比” (bǐ). The negative form of this type of sentence can technically be done by adding “不” (bù) before “比”. However, the following sentence pattern using 没有 (méiyǒu) is more commonly used in Chinese for negative comparisons.
While “不比” (bù bǐ) is grammatically correct, native speakers overwhelmingly prefer using 没有 for “not as…as” comparisons.
Comparison: 不比 vs. 没有
Key Difference: 没有 (méiyǒu) literally means “doesn’t have” and creates a more natural comparison structure in Chinese for expressing “not as…as”.
1 Basic Pattern: A 没有 B + Stative Verb
Grammar Explanation: The structure A 没有 B + Stative Verb is used to express that A is not as [adjective] as B. This is the most common way to make negative comparative statements in Chinese.
Literally, this structure means “A doesn’t have B’s [quality]”.
