Giving Directions 往/向/朝

Learn how to give directions in Chinese using directional verbs 往 (wǎng), 向 (xiàng), and 朝 (cháo) with direction words

1 Basic Sentence Pattern

Besides knowing how to express distance using 离, it’s also necessary to be able to give directions. In Chinese, the verbs 往 (wǎng), 向 (xiàng), and 朝 (cháo) can be used to give directions. These verbs are followed by direction words and then the main action verb.

S + 往/向/朝 + Direction + V

Key Points About the Structure

1. Direction words come immediately after 往, 向, or 朝
2. Main verb comes after the direction word
3. Specific places (like 学校 – school) can also be used as directions
4. The pattern shows movement towards a direction or place

Flow: Subject → Direction Verb (往/向/朝) → Direction → Action Verb
Example: 他 (he) + 朝 (towards) + 学校 (school) + 跑 (run)

2 Direction Verbs: 往, 向, 朝
