Expressing HOW Actions Are Done

Learn how to describe how actions are performed using the Verb + 得 + Adjective pattern in Chinese

1 Basic Descriptive Structure

In Chinese, to describe how an action is performed, we use the pattern: Subject + Verb + 得 + Adjective. The adjective (stative verb) describes the manner or quality of the action, and 得 (de) is the structural particle that connects the verb to the adjective.

The Verb in the Pattern

The verb in this structure represents the action being described. It can be any action verb that can be performed in a particular manner.

跑 (pǎo)
pǎo
Meaning: to run
跑得很慢
run very slowly
说 (shuō)
shuō
Meaning: to speak
说得很清楚

过 (guò)
guò
Meaning: to pass (time)
过得很快

Key point: The verb shows what action is being described

The Function of 得 (de)

得 (de) is a structural particle that connects the verb to the descriptive phrase. It has no meaning of its own but is essential grammatically.

Without 得 (Incorrect)
✗ tā pǎo hěn màn
Structure: S + V + Adv + Adj
Meaning: (Grammatically incorrect)
With 得 (Correct)
✓ tā pǎo de hěn màn
Structure: S + V + 得 + Adv + Adj
Meaning: He runs very slowly.
Pronunciation note: 得 is pronounced as a neutral tone “de” (轻声) in this structure, not as “dé” or “děi”.

Key point: 得 is mandatory – it creates the grammatical connection between verb and description

2 Adverbs and Degree Indicators

Adverbs (degree words) precede the adjectives in this structure to indicate how much or to what degree the action is performed in that manner. These adverbs modify the adjective, not the verb.

S + V + + Adverb + Adjective

Examples with Different Adverbs

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S + V + 得 + 很 + Adj
pǎo de hěn màn.
He runs very slowly.
S + V + 得 + 真 + Adj
时间
shíjiān guò de zhēn kuài.
Time goes really fast.
S + V + 得 + 非常 + Adj
那件事情我非常清楚
nà jiàn shìqíng wǒ de fēicháng qīngchu.
I remember that thing very clearly.

很 (hěn)

hěn
“very” (most common)
跑得很慢
run very slowly
Note: Often used even when not emphasizing “very”

真 (zhēn)

zhēn
“really, truly”
过得真快
pass really quickly
Note: Expresses genuine feeling or surprise

非常 (fēicháng)

非常
fēicháng
“extremely, very”
记得非常清楚
remember extremely clearly
Note: Stronger than 很, emphasizes high degree

太 (tài)

tài
“too, excessively”
吃得太快
eat too quickly
Note: Often implies something is excessive

The Special Case of 很 (hěn)

The adverb 很 (hěn) is often used in a grammatical rather than semantic way in Chinese. Even when not emphasizing “very,” 很 is frequently included to make the sentence sound natural.

With literal “very” meaning: 他跑得很慢。
He runs very slowly. (Emphasizing slowness)
As grammatical requirement: 他跑得慢。
He runs slowly. (Without 很, sounds incomplete or unnatural in many contexts)

In many cases, 很 functions more as a grammatical particle than as an intensifier. Without it, the sentence often sounds abrupt or incomplete.
