Learn how to emphasize specific information in Chinese sentences using the 是…的 (shì…de) structure
1 Basic Structure and Function
The structure 是…的 (shì…de) is used to emphasize a specific part of a sentence, such as the place, time, manner, reason, or agent of an action.
是 (shì) is placed at the beginning of the element to be emphasized, and 的 (de) is placed at the end of the sentence to complete the emphasis structure.
Emphasis Structure Visualization
Key Point: This structure doesn’t translate literally as “is…of” but functions as an emphasis marker. The English translation often uses “it is…that” to convey the emphasis.
2 What Information Can Be Emphasized?
The 是…的 structure can emphasize various types of information in a sentence. Here are the most common elements that can be stressed:
Time
Emphasizing when something happened
Place
Emphasizing where something happened
Manner
Emphasizing how something happened
Reason/Purpose
Emphasizing why something happened
Important Usage Notes
Past Tense Focus
The 是…的 pattern is mainly used when the action is in the past. It’s used to provide background details about completed actions.
Omission of 是
In positive sentences, 是 is often omitted as it’s understood from context. However, 的 can never be omitted.
Negative Sentences
In negative sentences, 是 is never omitted. Use 不是 (búshì) to form the negative.
