Difference between 就 and 才

就 (jiù) vs 才 (cái) – Understanding the key difference in emphasis between 就 (faster/earlier than expected) and 才 (slower/later than expected)

1 Key Grammar Concept

It is often difficult at first to know how to use 就 and 才 correctly. The important point to notice is that the difference between them is often not one of meaning but of emphasis.

Both 就 and 才 are used to express the relationship between an action and the time/duration it takes, but they emphasize different aspects of the timing:

  • 就 (jiù) emphasizes that something happens faster or earlier than expected.
  • 才 (cái) emphasizes that something happens slower or later than expected.
就 (jiù)
Earlier/Faster
Before expected time
Compared to expectation
才 (cái)
Later/Slower
After expected time

2 Speed Comparison: Faster vs Slower

就 emphasizes faster than expected, while 才 emphasizes slower than expected. This usage focuses on how quickly or slowly something is completed relative to expectations.
