Have you heard of “dazi”? It‘s a very popular word among contemporary young Chinese people. A “dazi” is someone who temporarily becomes your partner based on shared interests or needs. For example, people who eat together are “meal dazi,” people who work out together are “gym dazi,” and people who study together are “study dazi”. This kind of relationship is different from traditional friendships — you don‘t need to form deep connections, don’t need long-term maintenance, only need to accompany each other in specific scenarios.
