Complete Action 了 – Part 2

了 with Number-Measure Phrases: Learn how to use 了 with quantity and duration expressions in Chinese

1 Introduction: 了 with Quantities

In Part One, we learned how to use 了 to indicate the completion of an action. In this lesson, we will see another situation: when the verb is followed by a number-measure phrase (indicating quantity or duration), 了 is added to the verb, and the number-measure phrase comes after 了.

Two Patterns with Number-Measure Phrases

Single 了 Pattern
V + + N-M
For completed actions with quantity/duration
走了四十分钟
walked for 40 minutes
Double 了 Pattern
V + + N-M +
For actions continuing up to now
学了两门语言了
have learned 2 languages

What Are Number-Measure Phrases?

Number-Measure phrases in Chinese consist of a number plus a measure word (also called classifier). They indicate quantity or duration:

四十分钟
sìshí fēnzhōng
40 minutes
Number: 四十 (40)
Measure: 分钟 (minutes)
一天
yì tiān
one day
Number: 一 (one)
Measure: 天 (day)
三个小时
sān gè xiǎoshí
three hours
Number: 三 (three)
Measure: 个 + 小时 (hours)
两种语言
liǎng zhǒng yǔyán
two languages
Number: 两 (two)
Measure: 种 (kind/type)
六条裙子
liù tiáo qúnzi
six skirts
Number: 六 (six)
Measure: 条 (for long items)
两瓶白酒
liǎng píng báijiǔ
two bottles of white wine
Number: 两 (two)
Measure: 瓶 (bottle)

2 Single 了 Pattern: Completed Actions with Quantity

When the verb has a number-measure phrase preceding it (indicating quantity or duration), 了 is added to the verb, and the number-measure phrase comes after 了. This pattern indicates a completed action with a specific quantity or duration.

S + TW + V + + N-M Phrase

Examples: Single 了 Pattern

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S + V + 了 + N-M
四十分钟
zǒu le sìshí fēnzhōng.
I walked for forty minutes.
S + TW + V + 了 + N-M
爸爸昨天一天
bàba zuótiān máng le yì tiān.
My father was busy all day yesterday.
S + TW + V + 了 + N-M
早上三个小时
zǎoshàng děng le sān gè xiǎoshí.
I waited for three hours in the morning.

Duration Visualization

Action
zǒu
walk
The activity performed
completed
Completion
le
marker
Action is finished
Duration
四十分钟
sìshí fēnzhōng
40 minutes
How long it took

Complete Sentence: 我走了四十分钟。
(I walked for forty minutes.)

Completed Action in Past

This pattern describes actions that were completed in the past with specific duration:

S + TW + V + 了 + Time Duration
S + TW + V + le + Time Duration
Meaning: S V-ed for [duration] at [time]
More examples:
  • 我昨天睡了八小时。 – I slept for 8 hours yesterday.
  • 她今天工作了三小时。 – She worked for 3 hours today.
  • 他们上周旅行了五天。 – They traveled for 5 days last week.

Duration vs Quantity

The N-M phrase can indicate either duration or quantity:

Duration (time):
走了四十分钟
walked for 40 minutes
Quantity (things):
吃了三个苹果
ate three apples
Both:
忙了一天
was busy for one day

Key: Same structure works for both time and quantity.
