Auxiliary Verbs in Questions

Learn how to form questions in Chinese using the positive-negative form of auxiliary verbs like 会 (huì), 能 (néng), and 可以 (kěyǐ)

1 Basic Sentence Pattern

In Chinese, questions can be formed by using the positive-negative form of verbs. However, when Auxiliary Verbs (助动词) like 会 (huì), 能 (néng), and 可以 (kěyǐ) are used, it is the Auxiliary Verb that is doubled in the positive-negative form, not the main verb. The positive-negative structure comes before the main verb.

Subject + AV + 不-AV + Verb-Object

Question Formation Flow

Subject

Positive AV
huì

Negative AV

Main Verb
说中文
shuō zhōngwén

Complete Question: 你会不会说中文?
(Can you speak Chinese?)

Examples with Single-Syllable Auxiliary Verbs

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S + 会 + 不会 + V-O
不会说中文
huì búhuì shuō zhōngwén?
Can you speak Chinese?
S + 能 + 不能 + V-O
不能看电视
néng bùnéng kàn diànshì?
Can I watch TV?
S + 会 + 不会 + V-O
大家不会跳舞
dàjiā huì búhuì tiào wǔ?
Can everybody dance?

Key Rule #1

Only the auxiliary verb is doubled in the positive-negative form, not the main verb.

你会不会说中文?
nǐ huì búhuì shuō zhōngwén?
Correct: 会 (AV) is doubled.
✗ 你会说不说中文?
✗ nǐ huì shuō bù shuō zhōngwén?
Incorrect: Main verb should not be doubled.

Key Rule #2

The positive-negative structure comes before the main verb in the sentence.

我能不能看电视?
wǒ néng bùnéng kàn diànshì?
Correct order: AV + 不-AV + V-O
✗ 我看电视能不能?
✗ wǒ kàn diànshì néng bùnéng?
Incorrect order: V-O should be at the end.

Key Rule #3

Tone change rule: 不 (bù) changes to 不 (bú) when followed by a fourth tone character.

不会 (búhuì)
búhuì (not bùhuì)
会 (huì) has 4th tone, so 不 changes to 2nd tone.
不能 (bùnéng)
bùnéng (not búnéng)
能 (néng) has 2nd tone, so 不 remains 4th tone.
