As soon as … 一… 就…

Learn how to express “as soon as” or “immediately after” in Chinese using the 一…就… sentence structure

1 Basic Sentence Pattern

After learning how to express Complete One Action, Then Start Another (using 完…就…), you might wonder how to say that one action happens immediately after another. The 一…就… pattern helps express the idea of “as soon as” or “just as soon as” in Chinese.

S + + Verb Phrase + , S + + Verb Phrase

Immediate Sequence Visualization

First Action
天亮
tiān liàng
day becomes bright
一 + Verb Phrase
IMMEDIATELY
就 (jiù)
Second Action
出发
chūfā
set off
就 + Verb Phrase

Complete Sentence: 天一亮,我们就出发了。
(As soon as the day became bright, we set off.)

The Function of 一 (yī)

一 (yī) literally means “one” but in this pattern, it means “once” or “as soon as.” It marks the beginning of the first action.

一 + Verb Phrase
As soon as [action happens]
一天亮
as soon as day breaks
一回家
as soon as (I/you/he) gets home

Key point: 一 is placed immediately before the verb phrase of the first action

The Function of 就 (jiù)

就 (jiù) means “then” or “immediately.” It connects the two clauses and emphasizes that the second action happens right after the first.

就 + Verb Phrase
then/immediately [action happens]
就出发
then set off
就想睡觉
then want to sleep

Key point: 就 emphasizes the immediate sequence – no time passes between actions

2 Structure Details and Examples

The 一…就… pattern has a fixed structure where 一 introduces the first action and 就 introduces the second action that happens immediately afterward. The two actions are so closely connected that there is virtually no time between them.

Complete Examples

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S1 + 一 + VP1, S2 + 就 + VP2

As soon as the day became bright, we set off.
一 + VP1, S + 就 + VP2

S + 一 + VP1, 就 + VP2
知道消息,告诉你。
zhīdào xiāoxi, jiù gàosu nǐ.
As soon as I know the news, I will tell you.

Time Relationship

Action 1
Triggering event
一 + Verb Phrase 1
Example: 天一亮
as soon as day breaks
Position: Beginning of sentence
Action 2
Immediate result
就 + Verb Phrase 2
Example: 就出发
immediately set off
Position: After comma

Key Concept: The two actions are so closely connected that the second one happens immediately after the first, with virtually no time gap.

Comparison with 完…就…

The 一…就… pattern is different from the 完…就… pattern you learned earlier:

完…就…: Complete one action, then start another
我吃完饭,就去跑步。
wǒ chī wán fàn, jiù qù pǎobù.
After finishing eating, I go running.
一…就…: One action happens immediately after another
我一回家,就想睡觉。
wǒ yì huíjiā, jiù xiǎng shuìjiào.
As soon as I get home, I want to sleep.

The key difference is that 一…就… emphasizes immediate sequence without necessarily implying completion of the first action.
