Time Spent – Have Been Doing

Learn how to express “have been doing something for a period of time up to now” using two types of Time Spent sentences in Chinese

1 Introduction to Time Spent Sentences

Time Spent Sentences are used in Chinese to express that someone “has been doing something for a period of time up to now”. These sentences emphasize the duration of an action that started in the past and continues to the present.

There are two main patterns for Time Spent Sentences, both using the particle 了 (le) to indicate the ongoing nature of the action up to the present moment.

Duration Timeline Visualization

Action Starts
开始学
start learning
Past starting point
Duration Period
两年
two years
Time spent doing action
Present Moment
现在
now
Action continues to now

Complete Thought: I started learning Chinese two years ago, and I’m still learning it now.
Chinese Sentence: 我已经学了两年的汉语了。

Key Grammar Rules

1. 的 (de) with Objects

When the verb has an object, 的 must be added between the Time Spent and the Object:

学了两年 + 的 + 汉语
have been learning + 的 + Chinese

Pattern: V + 了 + Time Spent + 的 + Object

2. Double 了 Structure

Both patterns use two 了 particles:

第一个了: After verb (了₁)
Marks action completion aspect
第二个了: Sentence-final (了₂)
Indicates change of state up to now
两年
liǎng nián
two years
十个小时
shí gè xiǎoshí
ten hours
三个月
sān gè yuè
three months
一天
yì tiān
one day

2 Pattern 1: S + V + 了 + Time Spent + 的 + O + 了

Pattern 1 is used when you want to emphasize how long an action has been performed on a specific object. This structure clearly connects the duration with both the action and its object.

The key feature is the use of 的 (de) between the time expression and the object, which creates a possessive-like relationship: “two years’ worth of Chinese learning.”

S + V + + Time Spent + + O +

Examples of Pattern 1

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S + V + 了 + Time + 的 + O + 了
已经学两年汉语
yǐjīng xué le liǎng nián de hànyǔ le.
I have been learning Chinese for two years.
S + V + 了 + Time + 的 + O + 了
已经坐十个小时
yǐjīng zuò le shí gè xiǎoshí de chē le.
I have been travelling by car for ten hours.
S + V + 了 + Time + 的 + O + 了
哥哥今天打三个小时羽毛球
gēge jīntiān dǎ le sān gè xiǎoshí de yǔmáoqiú le.
My brother has been playing badminton for three hours today.

已经 (yǐjīng) Usage

已经 means “already” and is often used in Time Spent sentences:

Function: Emphasizes the action started in the past
我已经学了两年的汉语了。
I have already been learning Chinese for two years.
Position: Before the verb
Optional: 已经 can be omitted
我学了两年的汉语了。
I have been learning Chinese for two years.
Difference: With 已经 adds emphasis on “already”

的 (de) Function

connects the time duration to the object:

已经学
两年
汉语
Function: Creates “time’s worth of” relationship
两年的汉语
two years’ worth of Chinese
Grammar: Time + 的 + Object = “Object of [time] duration”
Note: 的 can be omitted for concise.

Time Expressions

Time expressions in Pattern 1:

General Duration:
两年
two years (no specific timeframe)
十个小时
ten hours
With Time Word:
今天打了三个小时的羽毛球了
has been playing for three hours today
今天: Specifies when the duration occurred
Position: Time expression comes after 了₁ and before 的

Double 了 Structure

Understanding the two 了 particles:

了₁ (after verb):
学了
have learned (completion aspect)
Function: Indicates action is completed to some extent
了₂ (sentence-final):
汉语了
Chinese [up to now]
Function: Indicates situation continues to present
Both required: This pattern needs both 了 particles to be complete.

With 已经

我已经学了两年的汉语了。
wǒ yǐjīng xuéle liǎng nián de hànyǔ le.
I have already been learning Chinese for two years.
Emphasis: On “already” – action started some time ago.
Tone: Slightly more emphatic

Without 已经

我学了两年的汉语了。
wǒ xuéle liǎng nián de hànyǔ le.
I have been learning Chinese for two years
Emphasis: Neutral statement of fact
Tone: More matter-of-fact, less emphatic
