Showing Possibility with 得 and 不

Learn how to express possibility and ability by inserting 得 (de) or 不 (bu) between action verbs and result complements

1 Introduction to Potential Complements

Potential complements are a special grammatical structure in Chinese that indicates whether an action is possible or achievable.

They are formed by inserting 得 (de) for positive possibility or 不 (bù) for negative possibility between the action verb and its result complement.

Object (Topic) Subject Verb 得/不 Result Complement
Action Verb
eat (action)
Potential Bridge
得/不
able/unable (possibility)
Result Complement
finish (result)
吃得完 / 吃不完
able to finish eating / unable to finish eating

Key Features of Potential Complements

1. 得 (de) = Positive Possibility

Indicates something can be done or is possible:

看得见
able to see
2. 不 (bù) = Negative Possibility

Indicates something cannot be done or is impossible:

看不见
unable to see
3. Object as Topic

The object often moves to the beginning as the topic:

这些菜,你吃得完吗?
These dishes, can you finish eating?
4. Three Types of Complements
  • Action Verbs (走, 完, 见)
  • Adjectives (胖, 快)
  • Directional Compounds (进去, 回来, 上去)

Positive Form

吃得完
able to finish eating
Structure: V + 得 + RVE
Meaning: Can do it

Negative Form

吃不完
unable to finish eating
Structure: V + 不 + RVE
Meaning: Cannot do it

Key Concept: Ability vs Permission

Potential complements express physical or circumstantial possibility, not permission:

Potential Complement (Ability):
我拿不走。
I’m unable to take it away (physically impossible).
能 (Permission/Ability):
我不能拿走。
I’m not allowed to take it away (not permitted).

得 (de) in potential complements is similar to 能 (néng) in meaning, but focuses on physical/circumstantial possibility.

2 Action Verbs as Result Verb Elements (RVE)

When action verbs serve as result complements in potential structures, they indicate whether the action can be completed or achieved.

Common action verb RVEs include: 走 (take away), 完 (finish), 见 (see/hear).

Tone Sandhi: 不 (bù → bú)

不 changes tone before fourth-tone syllables:

Before 4th tone:
听不见 (tīng bú jiàn)
不 → bú
Before other tones:
吃不完 (chī bù wán)
不 → bù

This tone change makes pronunciation smoother.

Question Formation

Questions are formed by adding 吗 (ma) at the end:

Statement:
你吃得完。
You can finish eating.
Question:
你吃得完吗?
Can you finish eating?

吗 converts a statement into a yes/no question.
