Complete Action 了 – Part 1

Learn how to use the particle 了 to indicate completed actions and events in Chinese

1 Introduction to 了 as Completion Marker

In Chinese, to indicate that a particular action has been completed or an event has occurred, 了 (le) is added to the verb. This particle functions similarly to the past tense in English but specifically marks completion of an action.

Basic Pattern: V + 了

The fundamental pattern for indicating completed actions is simply adding 了 after the verb:

V +

Action Completion Visualization

Action Begins
huā
flower
Before blooming
开 (kāi)
to bloom
Completion Marker
le
completed
Marks action as finished
Result State
开花了
kāi huā le
has bloomed
Now in bloom state

Complete Sentence: 花开了。
(The flowers have bloomed.)

Key Characteristics of 了 as Completion Marker

Not Tense Marker

了 marks completion, not past tense.
明天我吃了饭就去。
Tomorrow after I eat, I’ll go.
了 can be used for future completed actions too.

Change of State

Often indicates change from one state to another.
他高了。
He has become taller.
Implies he wasn’t tall before.

2 Basic Sentence Pattern with 了

The simplest structure for completed actions places 了 directly after the verb. Adverbs like 已经 (yǐjīng – already) can be added to emphasize the completion.

S + Adverb + V +

Examples: Basic Pattern

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S + V + 了
huā kāi le.
The flowers have bloomed.
S + 已经 + V + 了
观众已经
guānzhòng yǐjīng zǒu le.
The audience has already gone.
S + 已经 + V + 了
流星已经消失
liúxīng yǐjīng xiāoshī le.
The shooting stars have already disappeared.

With 已经 (yǐjīng)

已经 emphasizes that the action has already been completed:

S + 已经 + V + 了
S + yǐjīng + V + le
Meaning: S has already V-ed
More examples with 已经:
  • 他已经睡了。 – He has already slept.
  • 雨已经停了。 – The rain has already stopped.
  • 饭已经好了。 – The food is already ready.
  • 我已经知道了。 – I already know.

Without 了 (Incomplete)

Without 了, the action is not marked as completed:

With 了 (completed):
花开了。
The flowers have bloomed.
Without 了 (not completed):
花开。
Flowers bloom. (general statement)

Key: 了 changes a general statement to a specific completed event.
