Learn how to use the particle 了 to indicate completed actions and events in Chinese
1 Introduction to 了 as Completion Marker
In Chinese, to indicate that a particular action has been completed or an event has occurred, 了 (le) is added to the verb. This particle functions similarly to the past tense in English but specifically marks completion of an action.
Basic Pattern: V + 了
The fundamental pattern for indicating completed actions is simply adding 了 after the verb:
Action Completion Visualization
Complete Sentence: 花开了。
(The flowers have bloomed.)

2 Basic Sentence Pattern with 了
The simplest structure for completed actions places 了 directly after the verb. Adverbs like 已经 (yǐjīng – already) can be added to emphasize the completion.
Examples: Basic Pattern
With 已经 (yǐjīng)
已经 emphasizes that the action has already been completed:
- 他已经睡了。 – He has already slept.
- 雨已经停了。 – The rain has already stopped.
- 饭已经好了。 – The food is already ready.
- 我已经知道了。 – I already know.
Without 了 (Incomplete)
Without 了, the action is not marked as completed:
Key: 了 changes a general statement to a specific completed event.
