Repetition of Adjective

Learn how repeating adjectives in Chinese adds emphasis, vividness, or describes the manner of an action

1 Introduction to Adjective Reduplication

Adjective reduplication in Chinese serves to emphasize the quality described by the adjective or to make the description more vivid and expressive.

Unlike verb reduplication which softens the tone, adjective reduplication actually intensifies or enriches the description.

AdjectiveRepeated Adjective + 的/地 = Emphasis & Vividness

The “Emphasis & Vividness” Effect

Regular Adjective

Basic description, neutral tone

thin (basic fact)

Becomes
More Vivid

Reduplicated Adjective

Vivid description, emphasized quality

瘦瘦的

thin (with emphasis, vivid image)

Core Concept: Adjective reduplication makes descriptions more expressive, vivid, and sometimes conveys a sense of endearment or familiarity.

Key Functions of Adjective Reduplication

1. Adding Emphasis

Strengthens the quality being described:

白 → 白白的
white → very white, quite white
2. Creating Vividness

Makes descriptions more lively and pictorial:

高兴 → 高高兴兴地
happy → happily (with visible joy)
3. Expressing Manner

Describes how an action is performed (with 地):

舒服 → 舒舒服服地躺着
comfortable → lying comfortably
4. Conveying Endearment

Often used for affectionate descriptions:

小孩胖胖的
The child is chubby (affectionately)

2 Single-Syllable Adjective Reduplication

For single-syllable adjectives (one character adjectives), reduplication follows the pattern: A → AA + 的.

The particle 的 (de) is always attached to the reduplicated adjective when it functions as an attributive (before noun) or predicative (after noun).

Single-Syllable Pattern

A → A A 的
