Learn how to add emphasis to negative sentences in Chinese using 并 before 不 or 没 to mean “actually not…” or “definitely not…”

1 Basic Grammar Pattern

In Chinese, we can place 并 (bìng) before 不 (bù) or 没 (méi) to add emphasis to a negative sentence. This structure conveys the meaning of “actually not…” or “definitely not…”, often used to correct a misconception or emphasize that something is contrary to expectations.

Subject + + + Adjective
Subject + + + Verb

Emphasis Visualization: Regular vs. Emphasized Negative

Regular Negative
不难
bù nán
“not difficult”
Standard negation
Add 并 for emphasis
Emphasized Negative
并不难
bìng bù nán
“actually not difficult”
Emphasized negation

Complete Example: 很多人觉得汉语很难,其实汉语并不难。
(Many people think Chinese is very difficult, but actually it’s not difficult at all.)

The Function of 并 (bìng)

并 (bìng) is an adverb used to emphasize negation. It adds a sense of “actually”, “definitely”, or “in fact” to the negative statement.

并 + 不/没
actually not / definitely not
Purpose
To emphasize that something is contrary to expectations or to correct a misunderstanding
Usage Context
Often used with 其实 (qíshí – actually) or 虽然…但是… (although…but…)

Key point: 并 itself doesn’t have negative meaning – it must be combined with 不 or 没 to create emphasized negation

不 (bù) vs. 没 (méi) with 并

The choice between 不 (bù) and 没 (méi) follows the same rules as regular negation:

并 + 不
Used with adjectives or for general negation
并 + 没
Used with verbs, especially for past actions
Tone Change
不 changes to 2nd tone (bú) before 4th tone characters

Key point: 并不 + Adjective | 并没 + Verb (past action)

Important Usage Notes

并不 + Adjective
Usage: Emphasize negation of a quality or state
并不大
actually not big
并不难
actually not difficult
并没 + Verb
Usage: Emphasize that an action did NOT happen (usually past)
并没去
actually didn’t go
并没看
actually didn’t watch

Core Function: 并 adds emphasis to correct expectations or misunderstandings. It’s often used when the speaker wants to stress that reality is different from what someone might think.

2 并不 (bìng bù) + Adjective Pattern

并不 (bìng bù) is used before an adjective to emphasize that something is “actually not” or “definitely not” having that quality. This pattern is often used to contradict a common belief or expectation.

Subject + + + Adjective

Tone Change Rule for 不 (bù)

When 不 is followed by a character with the 4th tone, it changes to the 2nd tone (bú):

Before 4th Tone
并不大
bìng bú dà
“dà” has 4th tone
不 changes to bú
Before Other Tones
并不难
bìng bù nán
“nán” has 2nd tone
不 stays as bù

Important: This tone change rule applies to all uses of 不, not just when combined with 并.
