2 Simple Ways of Asking Questions

Learn two essential ways to form questions in Mandarin Chinese using 吗 (ma) and the positive-negative verb pattern

1 Method 1: Adding 吗 (ma) at the End

The simplest way to ask a yes-no question in Chinese is to add the interrogative particle 吗 (ma) to the end of a statement. The sentence word order remains unchanged.

Subject (S) + Verb (V) + Noun/Object (N) + 吗?

Example Sentences

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S V N 吗?
你是小王吗?
nǐ shì xiǎowánɡ mɑ?
Are you Xiao Wang?
S V N 吗?
迈克尔是美国人吗?
màikè’ěr shì měiɡuórén mɑ?
Is Michael an American?
S V N 吗?
她姓李吗?
tā xìnɡ lǐ mɑ?
Is she surnamed Li?

Key Point: This is the most common and straightforward way to form yes-no questions in Chinese. Simply take any statement and add 吗 at the end.

2 Method 2: Positive + Negative Verb Pattern

Another way to ask questions is to use the positive form of the verb immediately followed by its negative form. This pattern is often translated as “or not” in English.

Important: 吗 is always omitted when using this pattern.

Subject (S) + Verb (V) + Verb-Negative + Noun/Object (N)?

Example Sentences

Structure Chinese English Translation Audio
S V V-Negative N?
你是不是小王?
nǐ shì búshì xiǎowánɡ?
Are you Xiao Wang (or not)?
S V V-Negative N?
迈克尔是不是美国人?
màikè’ěr shì búshì měiɡuórén?
Is Michael an American (or not)?
S V V-Negative N?
她姓不姓李?
tā xìnɡ búxìnɡ lǐ?
Is she surnamed Li (or not)?

Pronunciation Note: When 不 (bù) precedes a 4th-tone character (like 是 shì), it changes to 2nd tone: 不是 becomes bú shì.
