没什么 – Not Many/Much

Learn how to express “not much/many” and “only a few/little” in Chinese using 没什么 and 没多少/几 structures

1 Basic Negation Patterns for Quantity

In Chinese, there are several ways to express that there is only a little/few of something or not much/many. The most common patterns are:

  1. 没什么 (méi shénme) – indicates “not really any” or “not much/many”
  2. 没多少 (méi duōshǎo) – indicates “not much” or “not many”
  3. 没几 (méi jǐ) – indicates “not many” or “only a few”

These structures are used to minimize quantity or express scarcity.

Positive

很多朋友
hěn duō péngyǒu
many friends

Negated

个朋友
méi jǐ gè péngyǒu

Key Grammar Points

1. Minimizing Quantity

These patterns minimize or downplay the quantity:

没什么好说的
not much to say (minimizing what can be said)
没几天
only a few days (minimizing the time)
2. Different Intensity Levels

Each pattern has slightly different emphasis:

没什么 – strongest negation
没多少 – moderate negation
没几 – weakest negation (implies “a few”)

2 没什么 (méi shénme) Pattern

The pattern 没什么 (méi shénme) indicates that there is only a few/little of something: not really any, not many/much. It strongly negates the existence or significance of something.

没 (méi) Function

The word 没 (méi) is the negation marker meaning “not have” or “there is not”:

Basic meaning: not have, there is not
没 (not) + 什么
Note: 没 is used for negating existence, while 不 is used for negating actions or adjectives.

什么 (shénme) Function

In this structure, 什么 (shénme) doesn’t mean “what” but rather functions as an indefinite pronoun:

Indefinite meaning: any, some
没 + 什么 (any)
Important: 什么 here is not asking a question but indicating an indefinite quantity.
