如果…就… Conditional Sentences: Learn how to express “if…then…” conditions in Chinese using the 如果…就… structure
1 Basic Conditional Structure
The structure 如果 (rúguǒ)… 就 (jiù)… is used to express conditional sentences in Chinese, equivalent to “if…then…” in English. In this pattern, 如果 introduces the condition (the “if” clause), while 就 introduces the result (the “then” clause).
Conditional Flow Visualization
Complete Sentence: 如果明天下雨,我们就后天去吧!
(If it rains tomorrow, let’s go the day after tomorrow!)
如果 (rúguǒ) – The Condition Marker
如果 (rúguǒ) means “if” and introduces the conditional clause. It sets up a hypothetical situation or condition that must be met for the result to occur.
Key point: 如果 always comes at the beginning of the conditional clause
就 (jiù) – The Result Connector
就 (jiù) means “then” and introduces the result clause. It shows the consequence or outcome that follows if the condition is met.
Key point: 就 comes after the subject (if present) in the result clause
Chinese Conditional Sentence Order
Important: Unlike English, the “if-clause” always comes before the main clause in Chinese. You cannot say “我们就后天去如果明天下雨” – this is incorrect word order.
2 Word Position Rules
There are specific rules about where 如果 and 就 can appear in relation to subjects in conditional sentences. Understanding these position rules is essential for grammatical correctness.
Position Examples
| Structure | Chinese | English Translation |
|---|---|---|
| 如果 + S + Condition, S + 就 + Result |
如果你想跳芭蕾舞,就要先减肥。
|
If you want to dance ballet, you need to lose weight first. |
| Condition, S + 就 + Result |
鱼离开了水,就不能生存。
|
Fish can’t live without water. |
