Learn how to use the particle 着 to indicate posture/manner of action and continuing states in Chinese

1 Basic 着 (zhe) Pattern

The particle 着 (zhe) is attached to verbs in Chinese to indicate either:

  1. The posture or manner in which an activity is carried out (e.g., lying down, kneeling, standing, wearing)
  2. A continuing state (e.g., waiting, holding, sleeping)

The basic pattern is simply: Verb + 着

Verb +

Background Action

音乐
tīngzhe yīnyuè
listening to music (while doing something else)

Main Action

跑步
pǎobù
running

Complete Sentence:

喜欢 音乐 跑步
wǒ xǐhuan tīngzhe yīnyuè pǎobù.
I like listening to music while running.

Key Grammar Points

1. 着 Indicates Manner/Background Action

The verb with 着 describes how the main action is performed:

听着音乐跑步
run WHILE listening to music

The action with 着 is the background/simultaneous action.

2. Word Order

The structure typically follows this order:

Subject + Main Verb + [Verb-着 + Object] + Secondary Verb
我喜欢听着音乐跑步。
I like [listening to music] running.

2 着 Indicating Posture or Manner

When 着 (zhe) is attached to verbs indicating posture or manner, it shows how an action is being carried out. These verbs typically describe physical positions or ways of doing something.

Meaning: stand
站着吃饭
eat while standing
zuò
Meaning: sit
坐着工作
work while sitting
穿
chuān
Meaning: wear
穿着大衣出门
go out wearing a coat

戴着眼镜看书
read wearing glasses
Meaning: hold
拿着书走路
walk holding a book
tīng
Meaning: listen
听着音乐学习
study while listening to music
kàn
Meaning: watch, look
看着地图开车
drive while looking at a map

Posture/Manner Pattern Structure

Verb-着 as Manner
S + [Verb-着 + O] + Main Verb
她戴着口罩出门。
Verb-着 shows HOW the action is done
“wearing a mask” describes manner of “going out”
Simultaneous Actions
Action 1-着 + Action 2
听着音乐跑步。
Two actions happening at the same time
“listening to music” and “running” occur simultaneously

Key Point: The verb with 着 describes the posture, manner, or background action in which the main action is performed.

Common Posture Verbs

These verbs often take 着 to indicate posture/manner:

Body positions:
站,坐,躺,跪
stand, sit, lie, kneel
Wearing/holding:
穿,戴,拿,抱
wear, wear (accessories), hold, hug/carry

着 (zhe) Function

The particle 着 (zhe) transforms action verbs into descriptive states:

Without 着:
戴口罩
“put on a mask” (action)
With 着:
戴着口罩
“wearing a mask” (state/manner)

Word Order Pattern

The typical sentence structure:

Pattern:
Subject + Verb Phrase + [Verb-着 + Object] + Main Action
Example:
哥哥 + 喜欢 + [弹着 + 吉他] + 唱歌
elder brother + likes + [playing + guitar] + sing

Important Note

Verbs with 着 cannot be used with time duration phrases:

Incorrect:
✗ 他躺着三个小时。
He is lying down for three hours.
Correct:
✓ 他躺了三个小时。
He lay down for three hours.
