就 Jiù – 2

就 (jiù) for Contradiction and Emphasis: Learn how to use 就 to contradict statements and emphasize your point in Chinese conversations

i Introduction: 就 as a Tool for Contradiction

jiù
To contradict / To emphasize

We’ve previously learned that 就(是) can mean ONLY. In this lesson, we’ll explore another important function of 就: contradicting statements and expressing different opinions.

When used in this way, 就 adds a sense of emphasis to your point, making your contradiction or different opinion sound stronger and more determined.

Key Function of 就 in This Context

In these structures, 就 serves as an emphatic marker that:

Contradicts
Challenges or opposes a previous statement
我就不想去北京。
I just don’t want to go to Beijing.
Emphasizes
Strengthens your own point or position
我爸爸就不会!
My dad just can’t!
General Statement
