Learn how to express location in Chinese using 在 (zài) with place words, positional nouns, and question forms
1 Basic Location Pattern: S + 在 + Place
In Chinese, to express where a person or an object is located, we use the word 在 (zài), meaning “to be in/at/on”. The sentence follows the pattern: Noun + 在 + Place Word. 哪儿 (nǎr) is a place word used to ask “where somebody or something is”.

The Function of 在 (zài)
在 (zài) is the verb meaning “to be located at/in/on”. It connects the subject with its location.
Key point: 在 is the verb that expresses location. Without it, there’s no location relationship.
Place Words
Place words come after 在 and indicate where something is located. They can be:

2 Positional Nouns as Place Words
Positional nouns such as 前面 (qiánmiàn), 后面 (hòumiàn), 上面 (shàngmiàn), 下面 (xiàmiàn), 里面 (lǐmiàn), 外面 (wàimiàn) can be used as place words. They indicate relative position and can stand alone or be attached to other nouns.
