半 Half

Learn the three different uses of 半 (bàn) in Chinese to express “half” in various contexts and structures

The Versatile Word: 半 (bàn)

The Chinese word 半 (bàn) means “half” but can be used in three distinct grammatical patterns to express different types of “half” relationships. Understanding these different uses is essential for accurate Chinese communication.

Usage 1: Half a…

Pattern: 半 + Measure Word + Noun

Meaning: “Half a [unit] of…”
Example: 半斤苹果
Half a jin of apples
半 comes before measure word

Usage 2: Number and a half

Pattern: Number + Measure Word + 半 + (Noun)

Meaning: “[Number] and a half…”
Example: 二斤半苹果
Two and a half jin of apples
半 comes after measure word

Usage 3: 一半 (a half)

Pattern: Subject + Verb + 一半

Meaning: “A half” or “half of it”
Example: 我要一半
I want a half
Used as object after verb

Key Difference: Position of 半

Usage 1
半 + M + N
半斤苹果
Half a jin
Usage 2
NU + M + 半 + N
二斤半苹果
Two and a half jin
Usage 3
S + V + 一半
我要一半
I want a half

The position of 半 changes depending on whether you mean “half a…” (Usage 1) or “[number] and a half” (Usage 2). Usage 3 is completely different, using 一半 as a noun meaning “a half.”

Usage 1: Half a… (半 + Measure Word + Noun)

When you want to say “half a [unit] of something,” use the pattern: 半 + Measure Word + Noun. In this structure, 半 comes before the measure word and indicates exactly half of one unit.

+ Measure Word + Noun
(half)
Measure Word
(斤, 瓶, 天)
Noun
(苹果, 水, 时间)

Usage 1 Examples

Structure Chinese English Explanation Audio
半 + M + N
苹果
bàn jīn píngguǒ
Half a jin of apples 半 comes before measure word 斤
半 + M + N
bàn píng shuǐ
Half a bottle of water Measure word 瓶 for bottle-shaped objects
半 + M
bàn tiān
Half a day Noun omitted when clear from context

Understanding “Half a Unit”

In this pattern, 半 represents exactly 0.5 of one unit:

半斤苹果: 0.5 jin of apples (1 jin = 500g)
Not “some apples,” but exactly half of 1 jin
半天: 0.5 day (approximately 12 hours)
Not “some time,” but half a day
半瓶水: 0.5 bottle of water
The bottle is half full (or half empty)

Key point: This pattern always means “half of one [unit]” not “some” or “a little.”

Common Measure Words with 半

Certain measure words are commonly used with 半:

Time measures:
天 (tiān) – day: 半天 (half a day)
小时 (xiǎoshí) – hour: 半小时 (half an hour)
年 (nián) – year: 半年 (half a year)
Container measures:
瓶 (píng) – bottle: 半瓶水
杯 (bēi) – cup: 半杯茶
碗 (wǎn) – bowl: 半碗饭
Weight measures:
斤 (jīn) – catty: 半斤苹果
公斤 (gōngjīn) – kilogram: 半公斤肉

Important: 半 vs. 一半 in Usage 1

In the “half a…” pattern, you must use alone, not 一半. This is a common mistake.

Correct (Usage 1 pattern):
半斤苹果 (bàn jīn píngguǒ) – Half a jin of apples ✓
半天 (bàn tiān) – Half a day ✓
Incorrect (wrong pattern):
一半斤苹果 (yī jīn bàn píngguǒ) – ✗
一半天 (yī tiān bàn) – ✗

Remember: For “half a [unit],” use 半 before the measure word. 一半 is used differently (see Usage 3).

Usage 2: Number and a half (NU + M + 半 + N)
